The Art Of Graffiti

Graffiti is often seen as a pest, a form of vandalism, a display of anti-establishment but when used in the right situation can also be a welcome form of art, a means of expressing creativity & in many cases adds colour & character to our otherwise sterile concrete jungle.

Believe it or not Graffiti isn’t a trend that has evolved from the ghettos of New York in the 60’s but has been around a lot longer, in fact Graffiti has been in use since Ancient Greek, Ancient Egyptian and even the Roman Empire era. The first known example of “modern style” graffiti can still be admired in the ancient Greek city of Ephesus in Turkey.

Tools of the modern day “Writer” have evolved in the form of Aerosol paints and marker pens but also leaving images in wet cement or in the bark of a tree can be considered as graffiti, often as statements of never ending love between young couples. Graffiti is naturally associated with the music scene, especially in America due to the rise of the hip-hop culture in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Since then many films have been portraying political situations and cultural differences with graffiti artists and there are said to be many gangs in the cities that can be recognized due to their individual graffiti styles.

“I laugh at the way some people think graffiti is all selfish tagging and vandalism. Thoughtful street art is like good fiction – it speaks out on behalf of everyone, for us all to see.”

“Graffiti is one of the few tools you have if you have almost nothing. And even if you don’t come up with a picture to cure world poverty you can make someone smile while they’re having a piss.”

“I spray the sky fast. Eyes ahead and behind. Looking for cops. Looking for anyone I don’t want to be here. Paint sails and the things that kick in my head scream from can to brick. See this, see this. See me emptied onto a wall.”

Did You Know?

Most graffiti artists prefer to be called ‘writers’ and each have their own unique ‘tag’. Artists who are into graffiti have a desire for public recognition and want to see their work around town, this is why each artists tag is different… it’s kind of like a unique signature.
