The Munich skyline is quite special if you think about it. I don’t know of any other city that has so few skyscrapers due to a law preventing the building of them higher than the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), Munich’s Catholic cathedral & at the same time offers an undisturbed vista of the Alps from Austria, all the way across to Switzerland.

This luxury does have its price though. When the weather is so clear that you can almost touch the mountains as they seem so near then it is a weather condition known as “föhn”. This is a type of dry, warm, down-slope wind that occurs on the downwind side of a mountain range. Residents in areas of frequent föhn winds report a variety of illnesses ranging from migraines to psychosis. I too feel symptoms of light depression because of this & have friends that are often ill due to this phenomena. On the positive side, a day where the air is so crystal clear is a day that one should cherish. How many people on this planet can boast such days where they can breathe real fresh air?

As mentioned above, the number & height of Munich’s buildings is quite low giving the Bavarian capital more of a village like flair than that of a modern metropolis, but who cares? I certainly don’t, on the contrary I am proud to live on the edge of a city that is so green, relative natural & doesn’t block the view.

Did You Know?

An ex-Mayor of Munich, Georg Kronawitter objected to the building of new skyscrapers in the city so he collected the signatures of over 35,000 supporters in order to force a referendum. Kronawitter’s proposal was that no new skyscrapers higher than 100m should be built. With only a 20.9% turnout, 50.8% voting “ja”, Kronawitter won meaning that future buildings in Munich are limited to 100m height.
