Widely known as the “City of Three Rivers” because the Danube is joined by the Inn from the south & the Ilz from the north.
Passau’s population is around 50,000, of whom about 12,000 are students at the University of Passau, renowned in Germany for its institutes of economics, law, theology, computer science & cultural studies.
Due to its location on the German-Austrian border & in the south-east of the country, Passau has become a major migrant entry point into Germany. Especially in recent years refugees & economic migrants from the Middle East, Asia & Africa who have reached Europe, often enter Germany through the city & surrounding area.
