Cloudscapes

I couldn’t call myself a nature lover if I didn’t like cloudscapes & I do even if it does mean having to withstand a soaking when one bursts overhead on occasion. In my opinion a sky without clouds is like beer without foam or fish & chips without vinegar.

If there is one element that shouldn’t be missing in any landscape photograph it has to be a sky with clouds. Clouds add focal points, colour and drama. Sunny pictures with blue skies are unfortunately lacking this drama when no clouds are present. I like to take pictures often with just the clouds in them, I find them fascinating.

Clouds before and after storms are my favourite situations due to the rapid changing light producing some pretty spectacular imagery. Sunny skies with towering Cumulus also make for good pictures as do sunsets with a good covering of widely spread low lying clouds providing some fantastic colours once the sun disappears behind the horizon.

Sitting on top of a mountain watching the clouds move through valleys shrouding the towns and villages below in darkness whilst standing on a sun soaked peak is like being in heaven, it is something that makes me think how small and unimportant we all are compared to the power of nature. It’s a similar experience to flying but with the wind in your hair.

Shortly before the sun disappears it leaves us with the thought of how splendid nature is.

Did You Know?

Cumulonimbus cloud, or in English, Storm cloud, is possibly at fault when your flight is delayed. It is capable of producing lightning and other dangerous severe weather, such as severe wind, hail, and occasional tornadoes. It is so unpredictable that pilots never fly through them, which often causes those flight delays.
